What is ISAN?
The ISAN (International Standard Audiovisual Number) is a voluntary numbering system for the identification of audiovisual works. It provides a unique, internationally recognized and permanent reference number for each audiovisual work registered in the ISAN system.

What is ISAN good for?

The ISAN as a unique identifier can be used in the following domains:

  • improve payment of authors' rights royalties
  • Backtracking and control of the exploitation by the buyer and/or the licence holder e.g. broadcast companies, Video/DVD manufacturers.
  • an asset in the fight against piracy
  • administration of film lists
